How to Choose a Hiking Backpack
Share
A good backpack is the mark of a true outdoor enthusiast, but choosing the right one is about more than just getting that sweet summit profile picture. It’s about finding the right fit for your body, along with the features you need to tackle any trail and excursion. If this sounds complicated, don’t worry. Here’s an easy guide on how to find the perfect backpack for you.
How Do I Know a Backpack Will Fit?
The most comfortable backpack varies from person to person. But shopping doesn’t have to be trial and error—taking some body measurements will help you get that perfect fit.
Start by measuring your torso length. To do this, have a friend use a measuring tape to find the distance between your C7 vertebrae and your iliac crest. Your C7 vertebra is at the bottom of your neck, while the iliac crest is the side of your hip bone. Essentially, you want to measure straight down from the base of your neck to just above your pelvis. This distance corresponds with your backpack length.
If you can’t find an exact match, the best thing to do is pick a size down. Smaller packs are less likely to sit too low on your back, which can cause pain from friction and imbalance. However, going with a larger backpack may be necessary in special cases or when you’re carrying unique equipment.
As you evaluate backpacks, consider where the hip straps will fall. Ideally, they should be comfortably at your hips, so they bear most of the weight. Straps that are too high or too low won’t provide the balance and security you need. This means you’ll also need to measure your waist. Wrap the tape measure around your hips, a little bit above your beltline, and compare that number to the waist straps on your potential new backpack1.
What Size Backpack Do I Need?
Finding your ideal backpack size can be challenging due to the range of options. Generally, the right size depends on your specific needs. Commuting to work will require a different size than a long hike or overnight trip1. Here is a general breakdown of size categories by volume and the best Topo Designs picks.
15–20L Backpacks
Bags in this size range are ideal for commuting and everyday carry. They provide the volume and accessories you need without unnecessary bulk. A good example is the Rover Pack Classic (20L). It has everything a commuter needs, including a sleeve for your laptop, spacious compartments, and our signature stylish look.
For anyone looking to minimize their backpack’s footprint, the Rover Pack Mini (10L) is a more compact option that’s perfect for quick hikes and running errands.
Get extra storage when you need it with our versatile Mountain Hydro Hip Pack, which can securely hold two water bottles up to 22 oz. each. The roomy zippered compartment keeps the essentials handy while you’re hiking, so you don’t have to fumble for your phone, sunscreen, or first-aid kit.
20–30L Backpacks
Get the volume you need for a daylong hike or an overnight trip. These tend to have more compartments and carrying-focused features. A good example is the brand-new Rover Trail Pack (22L). It’s our most capable hiking backpack, complete with modern features designed for outdoor recreation. Take advantage of the built-in water bladder pouch, front J-zipper, stowable waist strap, daisy chain for accessory bags, molded back panel, and laptop sleeve. The combination of features makes it great for weekend travels and day treks.

What Features Are Available?
Features are everything when choosing a backpack. They determine what you can carry, how you can organize, and ease of access to your things. Here are two key categories of features to look out for.
Storage Capacity and Organization
Get more out of your backpack’s volume with flexible storage and organization features. Not only can you add accessories, like pack bags, to the main compartment, but you can also clip or tie smaller bags and water bottles to exterior straps or store them in accessible pockets.
These are some of the most important features that expand your bag’s storage options:
- Exterior storage: Look for zippered or mesh pockets in easy-to-reach areas for quick access to the essentials and spend less time digging for them in the main compartment2. Bungee pass-throughs and daisy chain loops make it easy to carry extra items, like a rolled-up jacket or clip-on accessories, without sacrificing interior storage.
- Hydration spaces: A reliable hiking backpack will include pockets for water bottles or water bladder pouches for hydration packs. You can also pair your backpack with our Mountain Hydro Sling, which is made for 32 oz. water bottles—like our Topo Designs Nalgene—and comes with a detachable strap. Wear the sling to keep your hands free or use the strap clips to attach it to your backpack’s exterior loops.
- Padded areas: Whether your next adventure is up a mountain to get some great nature photos or across town for a meeting, padding is a must when traveling with electronics. Not only will it protect your devices, but it will also make carrying more comfortable.
- Accessible compartments: Backpacks typically have a main compartment and extra pockets and compartments that open on the front or sides2. What configuration is easiest and most comfortable for you to reach? This can make all the difference when you’re going through a bag check at the airport or grabbing your camera for the perfect shot.
Adjustability and Weight Distribution Features
A backpack’s fit is about more than just its length. Being able to adjust and secure the straps allows you to properly distribute the carried weight. Here’s what to look for when evaluating a backpack for weight distribution:
- Adjustable wide shoulder straps provide extra padding for comfort
- A sternum strap to help relieve pressure on your shoulders, especially for larger backpacks
- Load lifters to keep the backpack close to the body
- Adjustable waist belts to fit the bag securely around your hips3
